🔳Manifesto🔳
Imagine this....if you take the variable of body type out, put 5 dancers with athletic builds on stage, it is just about the art they create. If you take the variable of height out, and put 3 tall friends together, no one sticks out for being “too tall”. If you put ANY of the bodies next to each other, and watch with a matured progressed eye, then you will enjoy what each artist has to offer. Like each body is just a different brush stroke...equally as valued on the canvas. Maybe we can help change the way people experience dance.
I want to give young dancers with atypical "dancer body" types an AMAZING local company to work towards and aspire to be a part of both as apprentices and professionally. I had very little examples to look up to as a athletic, curvy, multiracial, tall dancer and was told over and over again that there was no place for someone like me. That is all about to change!
Finally...a place in the dance industry that includes all types of dancers. High standards, but broad vision. Let’s make this change to the dance world!!! Athletic bodies are beautiful. TALL bodies are beautiful. Curvy bodies are beautiful. Skinny bodies are beautiful. Short bodies are beautiful. DANCERS OF ALL SHAPES ARE VALUABLE ARTISTS.

APPRENTICESHIPS
Apprentices must have advanced dance experience and have previously worked within a rigorous performance-driven environment. Dancers will not be chosen based on their body type, but based on their skill level, maturity, talent and work ethic. Apprenticeships are an opportunity for dancers to understudy alongside the Company Members. Apprentices will also have the opportunity to perform pieces with each other. In exceptional cases, an Apprentice may be asked to fill in for a Company Member, so it is truly an understudying experience. However, SHAPPE is not a training program intended to replace studio technique classes. It is a performance-based, supplemental learning experience. Dancers must stay enrolled at their home studio in their regular technique classes and receive written approval from their Studio Director to be a part of the program.
YOUTH CHOREOGRAPHERS
Famous singers write and record their own songs at a young age, actors direct their own films when they are young, and painters are allowed to paint at their own discretion...why should dance be any different?! Choreographers need to be nurtured from a young age, too. SHAPPE is here to provide a platform for artists who may not have opportunities to choreograph elsewhere.
Youth Choreographers will be mentored and will set their piece under my supervision. We recognize that they are not professionals and need guidance in the process, but will allow them to make artistic decisions.Youth Choreographers will gain a whole new skill set and will display mature behavior in a classroom setting.
WORKSHOPS
We will offer workshops and intensives to learn from Company Members and out of town guest artists! Apprentices will attend public workshops at discounted rates and will also have access to exclusive workshops reserved for SHAPPE Company Members and Apprentices.
